Wireless charging with QI2

Tech News - Wireless charging with QI2

October 10, 2023

Wireless charging has undergone a huge transformation over the past decade and is now an indispensable part of many modern electronic devices. It started out as a useful but relatively rare technology, used mainly in niche products. But thanks to continued innovations and standardization, such as the Qi standard, wireless charging has become a reliable feature in smartphones, smartwatches, wireless earbuds and other devices.

It is expected that wireless charging will only become more popular in the future and will spread further to different types of devices, becoming even more integrated into our daily lives.

A new charging variant makes wireless charging faster and safer. By using magnetic rings, your smartphone is immediately brought into the correct position in relation to the wireless charging coil. This way there is no unnecessary loss during loading. Apple introduced MagSafe about 3 years ago, together with the iPhone 12, which is based on this principle. Qi2 was recently introduced and works with magnetic rings, just like MagSafe. The current 15W charging speed is expected to increase significantly in the future on both platforms.

The differences between MagSafe and Qi2 are small, but as an Apple user you currently have (even) more security with MagSafe, because it is already widely supported. However, we assume that a wave of phones that are QI2 compatible will come onto the market at the end of 2023 or 2024. This is likely to accelerate the adoption of Qi2 as a new standard for wireless charging. This will likely increase the demand for wireless chargers, power banks and cases.
